Ahavani Mullen, Encaustic Paintings + Oil Pastels
I consider the process of creating art to be a spiritual practice, as it draws on inner experiences and meditations. My work explores how the earth plane and the higher, inner worlds blend with each other and complete each other.
Painting with encaustic is particularly well suited to the atmospheres I wish to evoke. I find that beeswax has a rich, earthy, organic quality as well as an ethereal transparency. Encaustic paint also reflects the light in color differently than in other mediums, producing a more luminous, active, textural surface.
About encaustic painting: Encaustic is an ancient medium which combines pure beeswax, pigment and damar resin. My encaustic paintings have 5-30 layers of pigmented beeswax, applied molten, built on top of one another, and then fused with heat.
