Veronica Bruce, Painting
My work revolves around the concept of boundaries. I am interested in the process of painting and image making and the different possibilities of manipulating paint while building and deconstructing boundaries.
My process begins by taking photographs of architecture and nature found within the city. I am drawn to images with dynamic lines and shapes dividing the frame into multiple sections with organic elements. I take some aspects of the image and draw them out quickly using a ruler. I am not concerned with keeping perfect adherence to the rules of linear perspective. I am more concerned about mimicking the geometric boundaries. The blank canvas becomes partitioned off with a dynamic separation of spaces. I use stains, areas of transition with blending, and thick, rich paint to paint the spaces. Mistakes that occur while I am painting the restricted areas become the main events. Smears between boundaries connect the spaces. Mistakes can become exaggerated with huge, thick brushstrokes of paint. I allow areas of pure, thick paint to dominant the surface. Boundaries become broken or are adhered to. Connections are also made across boundaries as well as between multiple paintings. They are about decision-making and the effects of decisions.
The unforeseen actions that the paint takes must be allowed to happen. Unforeseen events impact the different spaces and adjustments must be made. My paintings are about actions and moments of pause, as well as building and breaking boundaries.
